Fireworks and the dangers/injuries which can occur
With the Fourth of July right around the corner, I feel it doesn't hurt to remind everyone that fireworks can be dangerous. There are incredible videos and articles about the dangers and these demonstrate what can happen to an individual when carelessly handling fireworks. This week, the Consumer Product Safety Commission provided another video on what happens when things go wrong. Click on "news," scroll down to June 22, "Celebrating July 4th Safely: Fireworks Big and Small Can Pose Risks, CPSC Urges Caution with Every Use. The video is amazing and actually features a young adult who was injured in a fireworks accident. The music in the video is bothersome to me, as it brings a bit of "comedy" to a very serious and deadly subject.
Did you know there were approximately 200 injuries involving fireworks each day surrounding the holiday? 200?!?! A total of approximately 6,300 report injuries in the 30 days surrounding last year's Fourth of July celebrations.
Please visit this website and review the safety tips. Let's keep this a fun, but safe, Independence Day holiday. In this report they indicate children under the age of 15 make up 40% of the estimated injuries, which means there are children who are 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. being injured by careless use and lack of supervision by parents. Watch your children and make sure you are there to help in case of an emergency, which can occur at any fireworks display. And please do not forget that situations with matches, lighters, fireworks and the like are not only exclusive to this time of year.
