Summer, Heat and Dehydration

Yesterday I woke up with a headache, would bend over and it would be pounding. I suffer from migraines and sinus allergies, but knew right away it wasn't either of those kind of headaches. I realized rather quickly, as it was so hot the prior day, that I was probably dehydrated. I drank a bottle of water and within about 15 minutes the headache was gone.

I thought with summer here, it was a perfect time to remind people of the dangers of dehyration and how to prevent it. In past articles, I have read it is noted that an individual should be drinking liquids before you become thirsty. If you are already feeling the thirst, you are already dehydrated. It is also important to consider what you are drinking to prevent dehydration from happening. On the Wikipedia site for dehydration, they note water as the source to drink. In my experience with being an athlete and excercising, Gatorade, is another option.

With Summerfest and other festivals occurring in the area, it is important to remember to try to stay away from those types of drinks that can actually cause dehydration: alcoholic beverages, carbonated drinks or those with high sugar content or caffeine (fruit juices, soft drinks, energy drinks). I know it's difficult when at these events, so try to remember to include water in your routine.

There are a lot of great websites out there to help with any questions you may have if you believe you may be dehydrated or are wanting additional information to help with suggestions for the summer (and throughout the year). Here are just a few to review:

Have a fun and safe summer!!
